15 countries, 27 cities, 50 museums – and 3 hours, 47 minutes, and 30 seconds of listening.
This box set-sized album is divided into four volumes, altogether containing 50 unmanipulated, four minute and thirty three seconds long field recordings of museums. In the same way that composer John Cage's famous 'silent work' 4′33″ put a conceptual frame around the act of listening, these recordings put a conceptual frame around the act of listening to places that put frames around art and objects of culture.
I've been making recordings of this length in museums for a decade now, and this collection presents fifty of my favourite recordings so far. Like a museum, the 'objects' on display here are placed in specific proximity to each other – a sort of cross between an exhibition and a mixtape.
The notes in the accompanying 75-page full-colour book (a printed version of which is available with the Collector's Edition) tell the stories of what happened to me while making these recordings, and also tell you a bit about each museum that I recorded. The book also includes an essay about collecting and listening, a brief interlude of a handful of sound-producing objects I've documented in museums over the years, and an index of the museums recorded.
These recordings represent a practice of contradiction: a series of performative nonperformances, visual experiences in sonic form. I hope you find them interesting in a way that means something to you. As much as museums are about independent learning, they’re also about finding out who we are as people within our cultural surroundings, and I think we’ve all got our own place to find within the culture of sound. Listening to museums seems, to me at least, to be a great place to start.
